There are two things that will get the entire city of Calgary galvanized for action. The first is the success of the Calgary Flames, a celebration which usually starts in October but has petered out by February. The next, and far more reliable, is the annual Calgary Stampede. This event celebrates Western culture and draws more than a million tourists to the city every year. It is responsible for some of Calgary's major innovations in the tourism industry, including better roads and airport WiFi.

The Calgary Stampede was started in 1912 by the four biggest cattle barons in the Calgary area. The goal was always to create the largest rodeo that could be had, although at that time the scope was limited to the biggest rodeo on the continent. Indeed during this time businesses in event rentals in Toronto would have loved to have an event paralleling the Stampede, as for years after its inception it was the event to be at in Canada (this was years before the TIFF).

Today the Calgary Stampede has exceeded its original goals. It is not only the biggest rodeo in North America, but the biggest one in the world as well. Cowboys and cowgirls from all over the country, the continent, and everywhere ranches are found flock to the city each summer to take in the festivities. The keystone events continue to be the rodeo attractions, most notably the chuckwagon races.

However, the Stampede has grown to incorporate many other events as well. For example, it always kicks off with the Stampede parade, the subject of many a Rosedale blog and other internet sites across the country. At different times the Stampede has also included a kick off trail ride.

Breakfast is a big part of cowboy life and the Stampede reflects this. There are all manner of pancake breakfast celebrations held every morning of the Stampede across the city. Some are designed to be rustic, taking place around campfires and by chuckwagons, while at others there is fine cutlery and linens. Toronto urbanites are always somewhat taken aback by this country culture, but pancake breakfasts are always enjoyed by everyone.

If you want to attend the Calgary Stampede, it is best to book your accommodations early. Attendance grows each year, and everything in the city becomes booked. A great way to get space for cheap is similar to what people do during the film festival in Toronto; condo rental from a local resident can save you a lot of money and get you a place close to the action as well.
